1971, IJsselstein, The Netherlands, works in Utrecht
Overbeek’s work is a melting pot of images and meanings, forming a world where obscure rituals go hand in hand with religion, art and language. From artistbooks and ballpoint drawings to collage and publishing, the works lays bare the assumed gap between established art and elements of (non) western visual culture and trivia. Materials and their connotations are equal importance as the images merged into one work leaving space for humor and absurdism.
THE BOOKS HAPPEN
In recent years Overbeek started to work more and more on artists books alongside his studio work and projects. Most of these books are made in collaboration with other artists and have the feel – besides their specific content – of an afterhours jam session. The title for this ongoing project that is steadily growing out of proportion ‘The Books Happen’ states exactly what is happening.
