The way we speak and think – is the implicit message – is highly contingent; what we tend to consider as normal and natural is largely a historically difined convention. It could have turned out differently, our identity is in every respect precarious and volatile and has devoleped largely outside of our will. Only an insignificant part of it is our own achievement. We are strangers in our own head.
